Tokyo Robotaxi Goes Public: I Took the First Available Ride

Shibuya to Roppongi at night. Fare, wait time, driving behavior — a full report.

Tokyo's robotaxi service opened to the public. I rode it on day one — Shibuya to Roppongi, 18 minutes, ¥1,820.

Driving behavior

  • Acceleration and braking are notably gentle
  • Lane changes are conservative; slower than a human
  • Pedestrian detection is faster than a human

Nice surprise / unpleasant surprise

Nice: none of the abrupt taxi-driver braking. Motion-sickness friendly. Unpleasant: rain-day wait times stretch past 15 minutes; the demand model still needs work.

Robotaxi booking apps are data-heavy. A Japan eSIM activated before landing means you can hail one straight from the airport.
